Nat's Front Garden Before & After

I am loving driving up to my house and seeing our front garden looking so good!

>I started by pulling everything out of the garden except for the pampas in the corner. That was a lot more work than I thought it was going to be. Those bushes had some freakishly long roots! (check out the picture below)

>There were a lot of weeds and old bark and some type of radish plants growing all in the garden so I dug out a ton of the dirt and wheel burrowed it to the back yard to spread in our many holes we have going on back there (that's another huge project :/). We then sprayed some Round-Up all over the bed to try and kill any remaining weeds.

>We got the stones from Lowes and laid one row down and another row standing up behind. The idea is to be able to put the mower wheel along the row laying down and cut the grass all the way up to the bed. We will see if this works, I got the idea from Pinterest. We love the element it adds against the brick house.

>The next weekend I went to Sanders Nursery and picked out the plants for the garden. I went with 3 Golden Boxwood bushes, a butterfly bush in the far corner, annual flowers all through the front, and some purple perennials that I forgot their name in front of the pampas.

>I hadn't realized how much dirt I had dug out until we had to fill it all back up! We used about 30 bags of top soil with some bags of manure mixed in. Once we got the plants in the soil and patted down, we spread Back to Nature, a top spread mulch type soil, all around the plants and bed to help with moisture and nourishment. Kyle and I both agreed it smells like the zoo, but don't worry it's already going away.

>We still have a little gap to the right of the boxwood bushes that we plan to fill with a tallish type bush to give it a little more balance but other than that we are done and super happy with the result!

Who would have thought we would be landscapers! It was a fun and good experience, I can't wait to watch it grow!

Sanders Nursery

In continuation of May Day, today I visited Sanders Nursery in south Broken Arrow to get some plants for our front garden.

Sanders is going to get at least an annual visit from me because it is now one of my favorite places to visit. I will definitely be looking forward to it every year.

The nursery is a huge covered greenhouse with all types of shrubs, flowers, and trees forming rows upon rows.

I was pretty intimidated when I first walked in but it was a beautiful day to just walk the rows and look at the wonderful plant life!

After some help from the friendly staff, and one call to my mom, I finally picked out what I wanted and took home some bushes and flowers for our garden. Kyle and I finished planting them all just before dark. I am excited to show you our before and after front garden soon!

(Almost) April Showers

It's a gray, stormy day here in NWA, but I don't mind at all.  Spring is finally making an appearance after the longest winter I can remember, and with all this rain, I can't stop thinking about planting flowers.  I've always wanted to learn the art of cultivating a garden--both floral and vegetable--and for the first time I'm not a renter, so this shall be the year!

We have some lovely little flower beds in the front and back of our new house that I can't wait to fill.  Funny story actually--the previous owners dug up several of the larger plants in the beds, and I can only assume they took them with them.  Daniel and I were pretty surprised to find fresh big holes in the dirt after we closed on the house, but what could we do? So the plan is to fill them tomorrow, and I'm pretty excited to choose what we'll grow there.

My dad planted a rose bush in our backyard when I was little and I loved watching it bloom every year, so I've been doing a little research on maintaining roses here in Arkansas.  I love the idea of planting something so big and beautiful right when we move into our first house and having it grow alongside us for however many years to come.

My spring fever is in full swing!
